In an effort to overcome recent challenges and drive forward their upcoming game 'Marathon', Bungie is making significant changes to its creative leadership. Christopher Barrett, a long-time Bungie designer, is being removed from his role as game director on 'Marathon', and former Valorant game director Joe Ziegler is set to replace him.
Multiple sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Bungie is currently restructuring its creative team for 'Marathon'. While the studio has not yet commented on Barrett's future with the company, Ziegler confirmed his new appointment as game director on social media, expressing his excitement to share more information as the game's development progresses.
Under Ziegler's leadership, the direction of 'Marathon' has reportedly undergone some adjustments. One source disclosed that the game will now feature a cast of selectable heroes instead of custom player characters. Bungie is reportedly investing significant resources into the development of 'Marathon', alongside prioritizing the upcoming 'Destiny 2' expansion, 'The Final Shape'.
However, concerns are growing about potential layoffs following the release of 'The Final Shape'. Insider information suggests that financial projections are not aligning, and cost-cutting measures may be necessary unless the expansion performs exceptionally well. Bungie's focus on 'Marathon' becomes crucial as the studio aims to release it before the anticipated exodus of senior leadership in the summer of 2026, following Sony's acquisition of the company.
Bungie has experienced significant upheavals in recent years, impacting morale and casting uncertainty over the studio's future. Sony's acquisition in 2022 promised Bungie a level of independence, but the studio has faced challenges in meeting financial targets, with 'Destiny 2' underperforming. In 2023, Bungie implemented cost-cutting measures, resulting in layoffs and delayed release dates for 'Marathon'.
It is worth noting that Sony has reportedly offered minimal intervention in Bungie's internal troubles, leaving the studio to address its own challenges. The notion of pay cuts prior to layoffs was dismissed by one member of the leadership team, further exacerbating internal concerns. The success of 'The Final Shape' is seen as critical in avoiding further turmoil within the studio.
Bungie has yet to respond to IGN's request for comment regarding these developments. The upcoming months will be crucial for the studio as it navigates through internal changes and strives to release 'Marathon', ensuring its position in the ever-competitive gaming industry.
