In a surprising move on Friday, 19-year-old Bronny James, son of NBA star LeBron James, declared his intentions to enter both the NBA draft and the NCAA transfer portal. The decision comes after a difficult freshman season at the University of Southern California.

Last year, James committed to USC as one of the most highly anticipated prospects in the country. However, his collegiate career got off to a rocky start when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a July practice. Following surgery to address a congenital heart defect, James received clearance from multiple doctors in November and finally made his debut in December.

Despite the setback, James showed promise as a perimeter defender for USC, displaying his skills on the court. However, he struggled as a primary playmaker and had a disappointing shooting performance, making only 26.7 percent of his three-point attempts. Overall, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 25 games, primarily coming off the bench.

Acknowledging the ups and downs of his freshman year, James expressed gratitude to USC for the experience and his supporters. In a statement, he said, "I've made the decision to enter the NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility, and will also be entering the NCAA transfer portal. Thank you to USC for an amazing freshman year, and as always thankful for my family, friends, doctors, athletic trainers, and fans for their support."

James, a four-star recruit, has been projected as a potential first-round pick, and with the NBA draft class of 2024 considered relatively weak, his chances of being selected are favorable. Additionally, his father, LeBron James, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, has openly expressed his desire to play alongside his son in the NBA.

The Lakers might have an opportunity to team up father and son if they retain their first-round pick or use their second-round pick acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers. However, this will depend on various factors, including trade agreements with the New Orleans Pelicans and LeBron James's own contract negotiations.

Bronny James has until May 31 to make a final decision on whether to remain in the NBA draft or return to college. The draft itself is scheduled for June 26-27. Before committing to USC, he also considered Ohio State and Oregon.

As the deadline looms, LeBron James emphasized that his son would have full support in whatever path he chooses to take. "Bronny is his own man, and he has some tough decisions to make," said LeBron James. "When he's ready to make those decisions, he'll let us all know. But as his family, we're going to support whatever he does."

Fans and basketball enthusiasts eagerly await Bronny James's decision, which could potentially shape the future of the James family legacy in the NBA.
