In a preseason showdown between the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers, it was the Broncos who emerged victorious in a lopsided 27-2 win at EmPower Field in Denver. The Packers' offense struggled to find their rhythm, while the Broncos' starting offense, led by quarterback Bo Nix, found early success. Pro Football Focus has released their grades, highlighting the best and worst players from the Packers' challenging preseason loss to the Broncos.
On the offensive side, OT Luke Tenuta showcased his skills, earning the highest grade of 69.6. Tenuta excelled as a run blocker and didn't allow any pressures in pass protection. Wide receivers Malik Heath and Samori Toure also received commendable grades of 69.3 and 64.5, respectively. Heath caught three out of six targets for 22 yards, while Toure had a perfect reception rate with two catches for 17 yards. OT Caleb Jones (64.2) and OT Travis Glover (64.0) rounded out the top five offensive players with solid performances.
Defensively, safety Benny Sapp III was the standout player with a remarkable grade of 85.5. In just 14 snaps, Sapp delivered a run stop and a pass breakup, showcasing his playmaking ability. Linebacker Kristian Welch (75.1) and defensive lineman Colby Wooden (72.8) also had strong performances, with Welch making three stops against the run and intercepting a pass. Wooden displayed his pass-rushing skills with two hurries and two run stops. DL Jonathan Ford (72.6) and DE Arron Mosby (71.4) completed the top five defensive players, making impactful plays throughout the game.
However, there were a handful of players who struggled to find their stride. Tight end Tyler Davis (33.9) had a challenging night as a run-blocker, with multiple missed or failed blocks. Quarterback Sean Clifford (35.5) had a tough outing, fumbling a snap, throwing an interception, and struggling to connect with his receivers. Wide receiver Grant DuBose (38.4) faced difficulties with two dropped catches, while tight end Joel Wilson (48.7) managed only one reception for four yards. Quarterback Michael Pratt (53.2) also had a less-than-stellar performance with a fumble and a low average per attempt.
On the defensive end, cornerback LJ Davis (28.8) struggled, allowing a critical catch for 22 yards. LB Ralen Goforth (32.9) missed a tackle on a touchdown run and received a penalty. DL Zach Morton (47.0) had a mixed performance, recording a sack-safety but also missing a tackle. CB Kalen King (47.2) missed multiple tackles and allowed several catches for substantial yardage. LB Christian Young (51.0) allowed a touchdown pass in a play where he tried to undercut a block.
In other notable performances, Grant DuBose showcased his versatility with a tackle covering a punt. Kicker Greg Joseph missed a 47-yard field goal attempt, while punter Daniel Whelan averaged an impressive 54.8 yards per punt, contributing to a net average of 43.3 and pinning the Broncos deep inside their own territory multiple times.
The preseason clash also revealed the struggles of the backup quarterback competition, as both Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford struggled with turnovers and struggled to complete passes over 10 yards in the air.
Furthermore, Brenton Cox Jr. led all players with five pressures, including a sack, while rookie linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper stood out with four defensive stops, three of which came against the run.
In the aftermath of the preseason clash, the Packers will need to address their offensive inefficiencies and defensive lapses before the regular season kicks off. Meanwhile, the Broncos can take pride in their dominant performance and look to build on their early successes.
