British track cyclist and two-time Olympic champion Katie Archibald will miss the upcoming Paris Games due to a devastating injury she sustained in a freak accident. The 30-year-old athlete broke her tibia and fibula, dislocated her ankle, and suffered significant ligament damage after tripping over a garden step.
Archibald, who took to Instagram to share the details of her accident, posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed along with a heartfelt caption explaining the extent of her injuries. She underwent surgery to repair the broken bones and reattach the ligaments, expressing her hope of being discharged from the hospital soon.
The setback comes as a major blow to Archibald, who had previously achieved remarkable success in her cycling career. She won a gold medal with the British team in the team pursuit event at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. Five years later, Archibald added another gold medal to her collection at the Tokyo Olympics in the women's Madison event, where she teamed up with Laura Kenny.
Unfortunately, this injury is not the first setback Archibald has faced in recent years. She was unable to participate in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after colliding with a vehicle. Tragically, her partner, mountain biker Rab Wardell, passed away suddenly at the age of 37 during the same year.
Despite these challenges, Archibald has a remarkable record of success in cycling. She has secured five gold medals at world championships and an impressive 20 gold medals at European championships, establishing herself as one of Britain's most accomplished cyclists.
While Archibald's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the British cycling team at the Paris Games, her determination and resilience will surely drive her towards a successful comeback in the future.
