British biotechnology company Oxitec is implementing a unique approach to combat the surge in dengue fever cases in Brazil by releasing genetically modified mosquitoes. The male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes developed by Oxitec carry a gene that prevents female offspring from maturing, thereby reducing the mosquito population. As of Feb. 27, Brazil has reported over 973,000 likely dengue cases this year, attributed to the hot rainy season. Oxitec's strategy involves placing mosquito eggs in boxes and adding water to activate them, with the adult insects emerging within ten days to reduce mosquito populations. The company's general manager in Brazil, Natalia Ferreira, reported a significant decrease of up to 90% in the mosquito population in areas where the modified mosquitoes have been released, compared to untreated neighborhoods. Oxitec's innovative initiative represents a promising intervention in the ongoing battle against dengue fever in Brazil.
