In response to second baseman Ozzie Albies' fractured forearm, which is expected to keep him sidelined for eight weeks, the Atlanta Braves have made a move to bolster their infield depth. The team announced on Monday that they have signed former All-Star Whit Merrifield to an MLB contract.

Merrifield, 35, was recently released by the Philadelphia Phillies after struggling at the plate, with a slash line of .199/.277/.295 in 53 games (63 OPS+). However, just a year ago, he was selected for his third career All-Star Game as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization, where he posted a more respectable .272/.318/.382 line in 145 games (93 OPS+).

With Albies sidelined, the Braves have also decided to promote prospect Nacho Alvarez for his major league debut. It is expected that Alvarez will have the first opportunity to replace Albies in the lineup, with Merrifield providing depth or filling in if Alvarez is not ready for the MLB level.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays have been keeping a close eye on the New York Yankees' system, sparking speculation that the two teams could be in talks for a deadline trade. However, it is important to note that the Rays' scouting of the Yankees' prospects may also be for general purposes.

Among the potential trade candidates from the Rays' roster that could interest the Yankees are right-hander Zach Eflin, outfielder Randy Arozarena, and third baseman Isaac Paredes. Whether a deal materializes remains to be seen.

In another trade-related development, the Detroit Tigers have been scouting the Baltimore Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, making it known that they have an interest in left-hander Tarik Skubal. The Orioles, in turn, have several notable prospects in Norfolk, including infielders Jackson Holliday, Coby Mayo, and Connor Norby.

Lastly, the Seattle Mariners have placed first baseman Ty France on outright waivers, creating the possibility for him to be claimed, traded, or sent to the minors. France, who currently holds a 94 OPS+ this season, is set to earn nearly $7 million for the year. The Mariners could potentially free up payroll by finding a willing trade partner.

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, teams are actively seeking ways to improve their rosters and address their specific needs. The next week will undoubtedly bring further rumors and potential deals as teams look for that competitive edge before the market closes on July 30th.
