In a recent announcement, the Boston Celtics revealed that one-time All-Star center Kristaps Porziņģis has suffered a rare injury to his left leg. The team reported that Porziņģis has a torn medial retinaculum, which has resulted in the dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon. This unfortunate injury has raised concerns about his availability for the rest of the NBA Finals.
According to the Celtics, Porziņģis' status will be determined on a day-to-day basis. The team listed him as questionable for Game 3 against the Dallas Mavericks, with Boston currently leading the series 2-0. Porziņģis expressed optimism and stated his determination to do everything possible to be on the court for the upcoming game.
The injury occurred during Game 2, specifically at the 3:27 mark of the third quarter. Footage from that play shows Porziņģis involved in a box-out collision with Mavericks center Dereck Lively II. Following the collision, Porziņģis appeared to be moving more cautiously on his left leg during subsequent possessions. He played for another 2:45 before being substituted, then played for an additional 3:26 in the fourth quarter.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged the seriousness of Porziņģis' injury and emphasized that the decision to play will be determined by the medical team. Mazzulla expressed confidence in Porziņģis' dedication to returning to the court, but emphasized that the team prioritizes his health and well-being.
Given Porziņģis' uncertain status, the Celtics are preparing for potential adjustments in their lineup. Al Horford, who started at center in Games 1 and 2, may see increased minutes in Porziņģis' absence. Additionally, Luke Kornet, who has yet to play in the series, could be called upon to contribute off the bench.
Porziņģis' injury comes after a soleus strain in his right calf kept him out of action for 36 days leading up to Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The Celtics clarified that the newly suffered injury is unrelated to his previous ailment.
Statistically, Porziņģis has played a crucial role in the Celtics' success in the NBA Finals, with the team boasting a +25 point differential while he has been on the court for 44 minutes. However, the team has performed evenly with the Mavericks in the 52 minutes that Porziņģis has been on the bench. During the regular season, Boston had a +11.2 net rating per 100 possessions in Porziņģis' minutes, which increased slightly to +11.8 when he was off the floor.
Fans, teammates, and analysts await updates on Porziņģis' condition and his potential availability for Game 3. The Celtics remain hopeful that their star center will be able to join the team on the court, but decisions will ultimately be made with his long-term health in mind.
