After achieving their 18th NBA title, the Boston Celtics face an imminent change as the Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C. revealed on Monday their plan to sell the team. This news was first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
According to a league source, majority owner Wyc Grousbeck is seeking to sell his stake in the team. However, it is important to note that this potential sale does not include the entire investment group that acquired the Celtics in 2002.
Speculations arise that the Celtics will be sold for an extraordinary price. As of 2023, Forbes valued the franchise at $4.7 billion, and the team's recent victory in the 2024 championship is expected to further increase its value.
The Celtics secured their second NBA title under the current ownership group by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the NBA Finals. With an incredibly bright future, the next owners of the Celtics will inherit a team with a strong foundation.
Led by Jayson Tatum and NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, the Celtics boast a powerful core. Tatum is anticipated to receive a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer, following in the footsteps of Brown, who signed a $300 million supermax deal last year.
Additionally, the team has solidified its roster by agreeing to a four-year, $125.9 million extension with combo guard Derrick White. Boston has also secured a four-year, $135 million extension with point guard Jrue Holiday in April, along with a contract with Kristaps Porziņģis for two more seasons.
As a result, the Celtics are positioned to maintain their status as perennial title contenders, a status reflected by DraftKings Sportsbook listing Boston as a +295 favorite to win a championship in the upcoming season.
The sale of the Boston Celtics signifies a significant shift for the franchise, bringing about new ownership as the team looks to build upon its successful history and continue pursuing future championships.
