### Fire Erupts at BioLab in Rockdale County, Evacuations and Road Closures Ensue

A significant fire incident erupted early Sunday at the BioLab chemical plant in Conyers, Rockdale County, prompting immediate evacuations and widespread road closures. The incident began around 5 a.m. and led the local authorities to establish an evacuation zone for residents in the proximity. Emergency responders swiftly acted to mitigate the hazardous situation.

With the fire reigniting later, the situation escalated, necessitating further precautions. Interstate 20, a crucial artery, was closed off in both directions between Salen Road and Turner Hill, adding to the disruptions. The Rockdale County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) advised all residents in the northern part of the county to shelter in place. This advisory urged residents to stay indoors, secure windows and doors, and turn off air conditioning units to prevent potential exposure to hazardous fumes.

The initial blaze occurred on the roof of the BioLab facility due to a sprinkler malfunction, which allowed water to come into contact with a reactive chemical. This chemical reaction led to a fire and the release of a significant plume. The exact chemical involved has not been publicly identified. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is actively assessing the plume to identify the chemicals present and their threat level to the community.

In efforts to ensure public safety, several roads around the plant have been closed, and these closures will remain in effect until further notice. JP Carr Gym has been designated as a temporary evacuation site for displaced residents. The authorities have assured that all necessary safety measures are in place and are continually being updated as more information becomes available.

During a 10 a.m. press conference, officials highlighted the malfunctioning sprinkler as the fire's ignition source and mentioned that they are coordinating the removal of the chemical pallets using heavy equipment. The Rockdale County government has committed to keeping the public informed through regular updates on their Facebook page. Additionally, a Public Service Announcement (PSA) will be issued soon to guide residents on steps to take if affected by the incident.

As the situation develops, officials are closely monitoring air quality and planning accommodations for evacuees should the need to extend the sheltering period arise. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow updates from local news providers and the county's official channels to stay informed about the evolving situation.
