In a strategic move to court supporters of Republican Nikki Haley, President Biden's reelection campaign unveiled a new ad on Friday that takes aim at former President Trump for alienating Haley's backers. The 30-second spot, initially reported by The Washington Post, highlights instances when Trump criticized Haley, using derogatory terms such as "birdbrain" and asserting that she was "not presidential material."
The ad prominently features the statement, "If you voted for Nikki Haley, Donald Trump doesn't want your vote," highlighting Trump's supposed disregard for Haley supporters. A quote from Trump's January post on his social media platform, Truth Social, is displayed, where he is said to have stated that Haley supporters "will be permanently barred from the MAGA camp." The ad also includes clips of Trump expressing uncertainty about the need for Haley voters and downplaying the necessity of additional votes to secure his return to the White House.
With a budget of over $1 million, the campaign plans to run the ad for three weeks in crucial battleground states. This is part of a $30 million ad buy aimed at targeting the seven battleground states deemed vital to Biden's reelection bid, as announced following the president's State of the Union address.
Earlier this week, the Biden campaign released a statement asserting that Trump has explicitly conveyed his disinterest in appealing to Haley voters. The campaign's email emphasized that Trump does not want moderate, independent, or Haley supporters within his camp. Additionally, the campaign revealed that Trump has not made any contact with Haley since her withdrawal from the race, following Super Tuesday, without endorsing the former president.
The Biden-Harris team perceives an opportunity to attract these Republican voters, arguing that Trump's actions are driving them away. Joe Biden himself expressed support for incorporating Haley's supporters into his campaign, stating, "Donald Trump made it clear he doesn't want Nikki Haley's supporters. I want to be clear: There is a place for them in my campaign" on March 6.
As both campaigns gear up for the upcoming election, the battle to win over crucial swing voters intensifies. Biden's ad release showcases a calculated effort to capitalize on Trump's perceived lack of interest in Haley's supporters, enticing them to join the Biden camp and positioning the former vice president as an alternative that welcomes a broader range of supporters.
