President Joe Biden and his allies have criticized former President Donald Trump over abortion policies following a report by The New York Times revealing Trump's private support for a 16-week federal ban with exceptions for rape, incest, and maternal life danger. Trump's campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Trump has not committed to backing a national abortion ban but would like to negotiate a deal agreeable to all parties.

Biden accused Trump of trying to restrict women's rights, with Democrats emphasizing the significance of abortion access leading up to the November election. The Biden campaign held a call with reporters to condemn Trump's stance on the issue, while the Democratic National Committee highlighted the role of abortion rights in the upcoming election.

Trump, positioning for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, boasts of appointing three Supreme Court justices who contributed to overturning Roe v. Wade, leading to restrictive abortion laws in several states. Despite this, Trump has avoided explicitly discussing his abortion legislation plans if reelected, preferring to briefly mention protecting innocent life at campaign events.

Trump's ambiguity contrasts with Biden's campaign, which has prioritized abortion rights, featuring TV ads and a "reproductive freedoms tour" spearheaded by Vice President Kamala Harris. A CNN poll indicated that the majority of Americans disapproved of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, aligning more with the Democratic Party on abortion rights.
