The decision, aimed at providing relief to these dedicated individuals, was announced in a statement released by the administration.
Addressing the past administrative failures that prevented these public service workers from receiving the forgiveness they were entitled to under the law, the statement emphasized the commitment of these workers towards serving their communities. The administration expressed its determination to rectify these errors, stating, "Because of the fixes my Administration has made, we have now cancelled student debt for over 870,000 public service workers - compared to only about 7,000 public service borrowers ever receiving forgiveness prior to my Administration."
The eligible 78,000 borrowers will receive an email from President Biden next week, according to the White House. Additionally, thousands of others enrolled in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program will also be notified if they are within two years of having their debt forgiven.
This announcement is part of a series of measures taken by the Biden administration to address the issue of student debt. As the president travels across the country, he continues to emphasize his commitment to lowering costs and delivering relief to those burdened by student loans.
President Biden spoke about his intentions upon assuming office, saying, "From day one of my Administration, I promised to fix broken student loan programs and make sure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity." He further reiterates his determination to utilize every possible tool at his disposal to provide student debt relief to more Americans and build an economy that prioritizes the well-being of the middle-class and those at the bottom.
This significant step towards the cancellation of student debt for public service workers demonstrates the Biden administration's dedication to addressing the challenges faced by individuals in pursuit of higher education.
