In a somber announcement, Leibensperger Funeral Homes in Leesport confirmed that Lori and George Schappell, Berks County natives and the world's oldest conjoined twins, have passed away. The twins, who were born on September 18, 1961, to Franklin and the late Ruth Schappell of Perry Township, died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on April 7.

The news of their passing came without disclosing the cause of death. Officials have respected the privacy of the family during this difficult time. Lori and George, who was previously known as Dori, were 62 years old at the time of their death.

Throughout their lives, the twins were known for their determination to live as independently as possible.
