Beloved Campus Cat Honored with Honorary Degree in Vermont

In a heartwarming gesture, Vermont State University's Castleton campus has awarded an honorary degree of "doctor of litter-ature" to Max the cat, a treasured member of the university community. As students prepare for their upcoming graduation ceremony on Saturday, the feline is being recognized for his remarkable friendliness towards the students.

Max the Cat, a popular tabby, has been an adored presence on the campus for several years. Residing in a house with his human family on the street leading to the university's main entrance, Max decided to venture onto the campus and embrace the college experience. "He just started hanging out with the college students, and they love him," shared Ashley Dow, Max's owner, in a statement on Thursday.

Engaging with students and forging endearing connections, Max has been a source of excitement for the student body. Whenever he is spotted, students eagerly approach him, picking him up and even taking selfies with him. Astonishingly, Max has developed a keen sense of when to join campus tours conducted by prospective students. "I don't even know how he knows to go, but he does," Dow expressed. "And then he'll follow them on their tour."

The fondness for Max is so profound that students refer to Dow as Max's mom. Even graduates who return to town inquire about the lovable feline's well-being. Max's impact on the campus community has been immeasurable, creating fond memories and a sense of shared camaraderie.

Receiving the honorary degree, Max's contributions to the university as an affectionate and engaging companion have been acknowledged. While he won't be participating in the upcoming graduation ceremony, his degree will be personally delivered to Dow at a later date.

This heartwarming gesture highlights the university's recognition of the meaningful connections that extend beyond the human realm. Max the Cat's honorary degree stands as a testament to the unifying power of companionship and the imprint that a single animal can leave on an entire community.
