A barge collision with the Pelican Island Causeway in Galveston, Texas has resulted in significant damage to the bridge and an oil spill in the bay. The collision occurred at around 10 a.m. local time, with no reported injuries according to Galveston officials.
Video footage obtained by CBS affiliate KHOU shows that part of the train trestle running along the bridge has collapsed, further exacerbating the damage caused by the collision. The barge involved in the incident, owned by Martin Petroleum, remains at the collision site.
Emergency management officials, along with state officials, the Galveston police and fire departments, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Texas Department of Transportation, have responded to the scene. The U.S. Coast Guard will be overseeing the response to the oil spill, determining its extent, and initiating containment and cleanup processes.
Reports indicate that vacuum gas oil, with a capacity of approximately 30,000 gallons, has been visually confirmed in the water, leading to the closure of about six and a half miles of the intracoastal waterway. The exact amount of leaked oil remains unknown at this time.
In addition to the bridge damage and oil spill, the collision also caused a brief power outage on Pelican Island. Galveston officials have confirmed that secondary power has since been restored.
Engineers from the Texas Department of Transportation will be inspecting the roadway to assess the extent of the damage. The bridge will remain closed until deemed safe for use, inconveniencing the approximately 9,000 residents of Pelican Island who rely on the bridge to commute to Galveston, including students at Texas A&M University at Galveston.
This incident follows a similar collision seven weeks ago at the Key Bridge in the Port of Baltimore, where six construction workers tragically lost their lives.
