In an exciting announcement, the broadcast crew for the highly anticipated Backyard Brawl between the Pitt Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers has been revealed. As the game approaches, fans who won't be able to attend Acrisure Stadium can look forward to catching the action on ESPN and ESPN2.
For the second consecutive week, Pitt finds itself on ESPN, with the network choosing to flex Tulane-Oklahoma to ESPN and feature Pitt-West Virginia on ESPN2. Mike Monaco will take the helm as the play-by-play commentator, while Kirk Morrison will provide expert analysis. Sideline reporting duties will be handled by Dawn Davenport, ensuring fans stay updated throughout the game.
Meanwhile, broadcasting legend Bill Hillgrove, now in his impressive 51st season as the voice of the Pitt Panthers, will entertain listeners on 93.7 the Fan and the Pitt Radio Network. Joining him in the booth is Pat Bostick, who will serve as the analyst. On the field at Acrisure Stadium, Larry Richert and Dorin Dickerson will provide additional coverage and reports.
The Backyard Brawl between Pitt and West Virginia is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Known for its intense rivalry, this game holds a special place on the Pitt schedule, particularly when it takes place in Pittsburgh. With the Panthers having secured a historic comeback victory in their previous outing, Panther Nation is expected to show up in full force this weekend, adding to the electric atmosphere.
Pitt enters the game with an impressive 2-0 record, following a thrilling come-from-behind win against Cincinnati. The team is poised to achieve a 3-0 start for the first time since 2020. On the other side, West Virginia comes into the matchup with a 1-1 record, bouncing back from an opening-season loss against Penn State with a resounding 49-14 win over Albany. Quarterback Garrett Greene and the Mountaineers' offense will be aiming to continue their upward trajectory.
The historical rivalry between Pitt and West Virginia spans over a century, with Pitt currently leading the all-time series 62-41-3. Dating back to their first encounter in 1895, the two teams have faced each other almost every year, particularly from 1943 to 2011, cementing their rivalry as one of the most celebrated in college football.
Although the series came to a halt for a decade due to Pitt's move to the ACC and West Virginia's shift to the Big 12 after the 2011 season, it resumed in the 2022 season. Last year, WVU avenged their defeat by defeating Pitt 17-6 at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Panthers will be looking to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance, which saw then-quarterback Phil Jurkovec throw three interceptions.
While the current series between the two teams is set to expire in 2025, fans can still look forward to more showdowns in the future. Another four-game series is already scheduled for 2029-2032, guaranteeing that the Backyard Brawl will continue to captivate college football enthusiasts for years to come.
