In a devastating turn of events, Nex Benedict, a transgender student from Oklahoma, tragically took their own life last month, just a day after a physical altercation at school. The full autopsy report, released on Wednesday, shed light on the circumstances surrounding Benedict's passing.
According to the report, handwritten notes that were suggestive of self-harm were discovered by Benedict's family and subsequently shared with the police. Furthermore, the report classified Benedict's cause of death as a suicide, citing "combined toxicity" from two drugs, one of which is available over the counter and the other by prescription. However, no specific details were provided regarding why the medical examiner believed the overdose was intentional.
The autopsy report also revealed that Benedict sustained injuries to their head, neck, torso, and limbs from the altercation, but these injuries were determined not to be fatal. Additionally, Benedict's medical history included bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and chronic tobacco and marijuana abuse.
Friends and family of Benedict confirmed that they identified as transgender and used both he and they pronouns. It was reported that Benedict had confided in their mother about being bullied at Owasso High School due to their gender identity.
The release of body camera footage from the police showed Benedict in a hospital bed after the fight. In the video, Benedict explained to an officer that they were attacked by three students after throwing water on one of them, who had been bullying Benedict and their friend over their attire.
Benedict's tragic death has sparked widespread international attention and has reignited the ongoing backlash from LGBTQ advocates. Many believe that the bullying Benedict endured is connected to the numerous state bills targeting the LGBTQ community in Oklahoma and other states in recent years.
In response to the autopsy report, Nicole McAfree, the executive director of LGBTQ advocacy group Freedom Oklahoma, urged Oklahoma lawmakers to demonstrate their opposition to anti-LGBTQ legislation and policies. McAfree emphasized the importance of supporting measures that promote empathy, kindness, and compassion, stating that "Nex should be alive, and the very least we can do in Nex's memory is demonstrate our commitment to building a better world that makes it impossible for this heartbreaking tragedy to happen again."
As the investigation into Benedict's untimely demise continues, Tulsa County District Attorney Stephen Kunzweiler announced that no charges would be filed against the other students involved in the fight. Furthermore, he stated that the contents of the notes discovered by Benedict's family, which did not reference the earlier altercation or any difficulties at school, would not be disclosed.
The loss of Nex Benedict highlights the urgent need for a safe and inclusive environment in schools, where all students, regardless of their gender identity, can thrive without fear of bullying or discrimination. It serves as a poignant reminder to society to prioritize empathy, understanding, and support for all individuals, especially those who are most vulnerable.
