The Taliban has released 84-year-old Austrian far-right nationalist, Herbert Fritz, who was arrested in Afghanistan last May. Fritz arrived in Doha, Qatar with the assistance of the Qatari government after being held in a prison in Kabul. Following his arrest, Austria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with Qatar and the European Union representation in Kabul, worked to secure his release. Fritz, a founding member of Austria's banned National Democratic Party, was arrested on suspicion of spying after defying Austria's warning against traveling to Afghanistan in 2021. Fritz's case gained attention when Austrian neo-Nazis and the far-right Freedom Party pressed for his release, claiming he was researching a book during his time in Afghanistan. The Austrian Chancellor thanked Qatar for their support in bringing Fritz back home. Qatar expressed gratitude to the caretaker government in Afghanistan for releasing the Austrian, emphasizing its commitment to mediation and peaceful conflict resolution on a global scale.
