Audra McDonald to Reopen Broadway's Majestic Theatre in Revival of Gypsy

Broadway icon Audra McDonald is set to take the stage at the Majestic Theatre, reopening its doors with a highly anticipated production of "Gypsy." The renowned actor will tackle the iconic role of Rose, a character made famous by legendary performers such as Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone.
The revival will be directed by George C. Wolfe, a five-time Tony Award winner, known for his exceptional directorial skills. Joining the creative team is Camille A. Brown, renowned choreographer known for her work on "Hell's Kitchen."
Showcasing the timeless classic, "Gypsy," performances are scheduled to begin on November 21, with the grand opening night set for December 19. This will mark the first production to grace the Majestic Theatre after its recent renovations. Previously, the theater had been home to the beloved show, "The Phantom of the Opera," which concluded its remarkable 35-year run in April 2023.
Audra McDonald's illustrious career, spanning across film, television, and stage, includes a staggering six Tony Awards. She has been recognized for her exceptional performances in "Carousel," "Master Class," "Ragtime," "A Raisin in the Sun," "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess," and "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill." Her most recent Broadway appearance was in 2022, in the production of "Ohio State Murders," and she previously collaborated with director George C. Wolfe on the 2016 hit show, "Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed."
Apart from her stage achievements, McDonald has also left an indelible mark on television with leading roles in acclaimed series such as "Private Practice" and "The Good Fight."
