The decision was made as part of the club's efforts to steer the team in a new direction and improve their performance in the second half of the season.
Expressing gratitude for Pineda's contributions, Atlanta United CEO and President Garth Lagerwey commended the former head coach for his dedication and commitment to the club during his four-season tenure. Pineda had been an exemplary ambassador for the organization, and his efforts were recognized.
During his time at Atlanta United, Pineda led the club to a record of 34 wins, 34 losses, and 29 draws in league play. However, the decision to part ways with Pineda and two assistant coaches, Diego de la Torre and Eugenio Villazon, was made to reassess the sporting operation and initiate a turnaround for the remainder of the season.
Assistant coach Rob Valentino, who has been with Atlanta United since 2018, will take charge as the interim head coach. Valentino previously served as interim head coach during the 2021 season, where he led the club to a 4-2-2 record. He initially joined as an assistant coach for Atlanta United 2's inaugural season and later moved up to become assistant coach for the First Team in 2019.
While Valentino assumes the temporary role, a global search for a new permanent head coach will commence tomorrow. The timeframe for filling this position has not been provided, indicating that the club will take their time to find the right candidate.
Goalkeeper coach Liam Curran will continue in his current role, ensuring the team's stability in that aspect of their gameplay.
Club President and CEO Garth Lagerwey is scheduled to address the media today at 3:00 p.m., where he is expected to provide further insights into the decision-making process and the club's plans moving forward. The press conference will be live-streamed on atlutd.com/live.
As Atlanta United bids farewell to Gonzalo Pineda and embarks on a search for new leadership, fans and supporters will eagerly await the appointment of a permanent head coach who can guide the team to future success.
