In a keynote address at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple has outlined its strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its apps and devices. The tech giant plans to introduce AI features to its products starting this fall, including updates to iOS, AirPods, and the Vision Pro headset.

Apple aims to build "generative models" into the core of its software, simplifying various tasks for users. These AI capabilities will enable features such as text rewriting, summarization, and on-demand image generation. Additionally, the AI system will leverage personal information stored on devices and contextual data from users' screens to provide relevant and helpful intelligence.

Notably, Apple showcased an enhanced version of Siri, its virtual assistant, which can now interact with files and activate specific features within apps upon request. Siri will also serve as a gateway to other AI features integrated into Apple's software. Users will be able to ask Siri to retouch photos or create new files in the Notes app.

During the event, Apple revealed its partnership with OpenAI, incorporating some of ChatGPT's features into its AI capabilities. With the permission of users, Siri can utilize ChatGPT's abilities and provide responses. Some of these features will be exclusively available on higher-end devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro series.

To address privacy concerns, Apple has developed its own servers running on its proprietary Apple Silicon chips, ensuring that certain AI features requiring remote processing prioritize data security. Furthermore, Apple has stated that its AI tools will initially be free, although it remains uncertain if access will eventually come with a cost. In comparison, Samsung guarantees the free availability of its AI features in the newest Galaxy phones only until the end of 2025.

Apple's iOS 18 software update, expected to release in September, brings several alterations to enhance user experience. Customizability of the iPhone's display is a highlight, allowing users to place apps anywhere on their home screens and incorporating dark mode options. App-makers will have the ability to create personalized icons for the control screen, making it easier to manage various controls in one place.

With a focus on messaging, iOS 18 introduces the capability to send iMessages and traditional text messages via satellite connection, enabling communication even when users are far from cellular coverage. The update also includes new text effects and the ability to respond with any emoji to incoming messages.

iPad users can anticipate personalized home screen tools, including a floating tab bar for app navigation. Notably, a long-awaited Calculator app will permit users to write math equations and expressions with an Apple Pencil for automatic solutions. Additionally, a feature called Smart Script will analyze handwritten notes to improve legibility.

For Vision Pro headset owners, VisionOS 2 will enhance the viewing experience. Users will be able to view all their photos in a slightly 3D manner, not limited to images captured in a specific format. The virtual desktop feature, allowing users to view their Mac computer's screen in the headset, will offer a wider field of view for better multitasking. Furthermore, an improved travel mode will prevent virtual windows from sliding during train journeys. Apple also hinted at expanding content offerings for the headset, including an original movie.

As Apple takes a decisive step into the world of AI, it aims to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving tech industry. The announcements made at the conference highlight the company's commitment to integrating AI into its products while prioritizing user privacy and personalization.
