During a cordial discussion, Cook emphasized Apple's opposition to the bill, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The legislation in question, House Bill 186, was introduced by Jared Patterson in February. It aims to implement stricter controls on minors' use of social media, including a prohibition on anyone under 18 from accessing any social media platform. Cook urged either modifications to the bill or for it to be dismissed entirely.

Governor Abbott has not disclosed his decision regarding the bill. "Safety and online privacy for Texas children remain a priority for Governor Abbott," Press Secretary Andrew Mahaleris affirmed in a statement. "The Governor will thoughtfully review this legislation, as he does with any legislation sent to his desk."

Apple has expressed significant concerns about the privacy implications of the bill. In a statement shared with the Journal and other outlets, a company spokesperson highlighted the potential repercussions for all users. "If enacted, app marketplaces will be required to collect and keep sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wants to download an app, even if it's an app that simply provides weather updates or sports scores," the spokesperson noted.

Apple advocates for alternative measures to protect children online without compromising the privacy of millions. In recent weeks, the company has ramped up its opposition to the legislation, including promoting ads in Austin that assert the bill is "backed by porn websites," according to the Journal.
