In a revealing interview, professional golfer Anthony Kim opened up about the challenges he faced during his 12-year hiatus from American golf and his determination to make a comeback. The former PGA Tour winner, who will be participating in LIV Golf's Miami event this week, shared his struggles with addiction, health issues, and the impact it had on his personal life.
Kim disclosed that during his time away from the sport, he battled "dark demons" which led to addiction problems. Doctors even informed him that these issues would prevent him from having children. Reflecting on the past decade, Kim admitted that he struggled with memory loss, not being able to recall many of the supposedly great times he experienced. It was only when his wife expressed an interest in golf that Kim rediscovered his passion for the game and decided to return.
"Golf is important to me and not important to me at the same time," Kim explained. "I've had some very dark moments. I've felt very alone, even when surrounded by a million people. I needed to get my mind straight and find my purpose in life."
Addressing rumors about an insurance policy that allegedly allowed him to collect $10 million for not playing, Kim clarified that he underwent multiple surgeries and had a long road to recovery. Hand surgery and spinal fusion were just a couple of the procedures he had to endure to address the injuries that had forced him out of the PGA Tour during his prime. However, he believes that his physical condition has improved, stating that he is now hitting the ball further than ever before.
Apart from dealing with physical setbacks, Kim revealed that he also fell victim to "scam artists" who took advantage of him during his younger years. He acknowledged that he was surrounded by bad influences and individuals who exploited him. However, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share his story and believed that it could inspire others facing similar challenges.
Kim hinted that there is more to his journey, saving the rest of his story for an upcoming documentary he is working on. Despite his recent struggles on the LIV Golf tour, where he finished last in his debut event in Saudi Arabia and came in 50th out of 54 players in Hong Kong, Kim remains confident about his ability to return to a high level in the sport.
"I have an interesting relationship with golf," Kim stated. "I didn't think I ever loved it, but now I'm falling in love with the game. This time around, I'm better prepared for success, with a supportive team around me."
As Anthony Kim prepares for his first American start in 12 years at the LIV Golf Miami event, golf fans around the world are eagerly watching to see if this determined golfer can make a triumphant return to the sport he once excelled in.
