In an intense Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final, Rangers center Alex Wennberg emerged as the hero, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to secure a 5-4 victory over the Panthers. The celebrations were jubilant, not only in the Rangers' camp but also in Alex Wennberg's personal life, as his wife Felicia shared her excitement on Instagram.
The goal marked Wennberg's second as a member of the Rangers, following a trade with the Kraken earlier in March. Reflecting on his achievement, the 29-year-old NHL veteran attributed his success to the team's collective effort and unity.
"I feel like this is a team that it doesn't matter who's the hero, doesn't matter who does it," Wennberg said. "We're all playing for one another. Maybe I haven't put up similar points, but as a team, everything we do together and we have an end goal. So obviously, it's a great feeling, good for the confidence, but I'm just happy about the team."
Winger Alexis Lafreniere and center Barclay Goodrow were instrumental in regulation, each scoring two goals to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead heading into the third period. However, the Panthers, who had a remarkable 108 shot attempts compared to the Rangers' 44, rallied back to force the game into overtime.
It was then that Wennberg showcased his skills, deflecting a shot from defenseman Ryan Lindgren into the back of the net to secure the victory. Describing the moment, Wennberg said, "You see the puck go in, and it's just this burst of energy, this burst of all kinds of joy."
Off the ice, the Wennbergs have been embracing their time in New York City. Felicia proudly marked their move and the impending arrival of their baby girl on social media. Meanwhile, their 2-year-old son, Rio, is excited to become a big brother.
In terms of Wennberg's NHL journey, he made his debut with the Blue Jackets in 2014 before signing a three-year deal with the Kraken. Now, wearing the Rangers' iconic blue jersey, Wennberg has demonstrated his skills and adaptability, becoming a vital asset to the team.
With a 2-1 series lead against the Panthers, the Rangers are gearing up for Game 4, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. As the tension rises on the ice, fans eagerly anticipate another thrilling clash between these two formidable teams.
