In a Manhattan criminal court on Wednesday, Judge Michael Gaffey denied actor Jonathan Majors' motion to set aside his conviction in his domestic violence case. As a result, Majors will face sentencing as scheduled on Monday. The actor, known for his role as Kang in Marvel productions, was found guilty by a jury of assaulting and harassing his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. While acquitted of two other counts of assault and aggravated harassment, Majors was convicted of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment.

The charges stemmed from a March 2023 incident in New York City when Jabbari discovered a text message from another woman on Majors' phone. Testimony from the trial revealed that their argument escalated, and Jabbari attempted to grab Majors' phone. She described in court how Majors forcefully twisted her arm and hand, causing her pain. Jabbari stated that Majors' actions left her with a broken finger and a lacerated ear.

Judge Gaffey justified his denial of Majors' attempt to set aside his conviction by stating that there was a reasonable view of the evidence supporting the claim that Majors acted recklessly during the altercation in the backseat of an SUV. The judge specified that reckless assault was an alternative theory to the original charge of intentional assault. The surveillance video presented as evidence also revealed Majors tossing Jabbari back into the vehicle before fleeing the scene, which played a significant role in establishing his guilt of harassment.

Majors' attorney, Priya Chaudhry, responded to the judge's decision, expressing Majors' disappointment while upholding respect for the legal process. Chaudhry emphasized that Majors draws strength from his loved ones and is eager to redirect his energy towards his family and artistic pursuits.

During a sit-down interview with ABC News earlier this year, Majors expressed shock and fear upon hearing the verdict. He denied twisting Jabbari's arm and causing the injuries she suffered, maintaining that she had come on top of him, squeezed his face, and slapped him during the altercation.

In a recent development, Jabbari filed a civil complaint last month, suing Majors for defamation and other alleged injuries. She seeks damages for the physical injuries she claims she suffered as a result of the incident. Chaudhry stated that they are preparing counterclaims against Jabbari in response to the lawsuit.

Following his conviction, Marvel parted ways with Majors, dropping him from future productions as the Marvel villain, Kang. The actor was slated to reprise his role in the upcoming film "Avengers: Kang Dynasty," scheduled for release in 2026.

Jonathan Majors' sentencing on Monday will determine the consequences he will face, as he potentially faces up to a year in jail for the assault and harassment convictions.
