In a highly anticipated decision, 5-star forward prospect Will Riley is preparing to reveal his college commitment on Sunday, June 23. The Canadian player has attracted significant interest from top programs, with Illinois and Kentucky emerging as the frontrunners for his signature. Riley's updated Top 5 includes Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, as well as the New Zealand Breakers of Australia's National Basketball League.

Riley embarked on a series of visits to potential suitors, touring Illinois on June 3, followed by Kentucky on June 4, and Alabama on June 6. After carefully considering his options, he revised his list on June 13, narrowing down his choices.

The talented prospect previously visited Arizona back in March, and speculation remains as to how he would fit within the Wildcats program. Despite being a member of the Class of 2025, there is a possibility that Riley may reclassify to join this year's recruiting cycle, which could potentially impact his playing time at Arizona.

Arizona's small forward position already boasts the presence of KJ Lewis, a sophomore returning to his natural position, as well as incoming transfer Anthony Dell'Orso. With the potential addition of Riley, the small forward room could become crowded, raising questions about the role he would play within the team.

Though Arizona is in contention, Illinois and Kentucky have emerged as the top contenders for Riley's commitment. Both programs underwent significant roster changes during the offseason, resulting in limited returning players. Illinois has been proactive in bolstering its lineup, securing notable additions such as former Wildcat starter Kylan Boswell and Notre Dame forward Carey Booth.

Crystal ball predictions on Riley's 247 Sports page overwhelmingly favor Illinois, with three forecasts in their favor. Should Riley choose the Illini, he would become their highest-rated recruit, potentially allowing him a faster path to playing time given the limited returning players and new additions fighting for positions.

Kentucky, now under the leadership of former BYU head coach Mark Pope, seeks to reaffirm its status as a basketball powerhouse following John Calipari's departure to Arkansas. The Wildcats aim to secure a top-flight prospect like Riley, who bypassed the Razorbacks to potentially deliver Kentucky's first victory against Calipari's new team.

While Kentucky has also undergone significant roster turnover, with star freshmen Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft, Riley would face stiff competition from incoming transfers Otega Oweh, Andrew Carr, and Jaxson Robinson for the starting small forward role.

The timing of Riley's decision has added complexity to the situation, as many roster spots and scholarships have already been filled. Coaches have made substantial progress in shaping their lineups and initiating offseason workouts. Riley's late decision regarding reclassification has limited the options for both Arizona and Kentucky, who have already secured multiple alternatives for the small forward position.

Given the circumstances, it is widely expected that Riley will commit to Illinois, providing Brad Underwood's team with a boost and the opportunity to contribute to collegiate basketball as soon as possible.
