Tragic Fall Claims the Life of a 20-Year-Old at Grand Canyon National Park

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK - A young man tragically lost his life after falling from the rim of the Grand Canyon on July 31. The incident occurred near Pipe Creek Overlook at approximately 10:40 a.m., prompting a swift response from the National Park Service (NPS) and emergency crews.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia, a resident of North Carolina. According to the NPS, Mejia was in close proximity to the rim when he accidentally fell, leading to a fatal outcome. Upon arrival at the scene, park authorities discovered Mejia's body approximately 400 feet below the overlook.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway with cooperation between the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office. The purpose of the investigation is to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and gain a comprehensive understanding of the events that led to Mejia's tragic fall.

In the wake of this unfortunate incident, the National Park Service is reminding visitors to adhere to safety guidelines during their visit to the iconic Grand Canyon.
