The tragic incident came to light on March 13, when a deceased juvenile dolphin with bullet wounds was discovered by an individual on West Mae's Beach in Cameron Parish.
Upon finding the dolphin's body, it was reported to the Southeast Marine Mammal Stranding Hotline, which prompted the NOAA to launch an investigation into the matter. The NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement is currently working towards determining the cause behind the dolphin's death and bringing the responsible individual to justice.
To further understand the extent of the injuries inflicted on the dolphin, the NOAA collaborated with the Audubon Aquarium Rescue, who transported the animal to the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans for a necropsy. The examination revealed multiple bullets lodged in the carcass, including in the brain, spinal cord, and heart. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the dolphin had likely died from the trauma, which occurred around the time of its death.
In its statement, the NOAA explained that the $20,000 reward is meant to encourage anyone with information to come forward. The reward will be granted to individuals whose information leads to a criminal conviction or the imposition of a civil penalty related to the incident. Anyone who has relevant information is urged to contact the NOAA Enforcement Hotline at (800) 853-1964.
The killing of marine mammals is a serious offense under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, with penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment. Not only is it illegal, but it also raises concerns about the well-being and preservation of these majestic creatures. The NOAA and other organizations are dedicated to the conservation of marine life and will continue to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
The tragic shooting of this bottlenose dolphin serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. It is our collective responsibility to protect and respect the marine environment, ensuring that these majestic animals can thrive without fear of harm.
