In 1993, Madonna's 39-date, $70M-grossing tour, The Girlie Show, showcased not only her iconic performances but also her strict discipline. Former back-up dancer Carrie Ann Iniba recently revealed the extent to which Madonna enforced her rules and demands during the tour.
During Monday's episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, the 55-year-old DWTS judge shared one of Madonna's stringent rules. "She gave us this one rule, which I'm so grateful she did," Iniba explained. "It was for every minute you're late, you have to pay her $100 out of your paycheck." This strict policy ensured that the dancers were always punctual, as nobody wanted to lose a significant portion of their earnings.
But Madonna's expectations didn't stop there. The Queen of Pop, then 65 years old and sporting a platinum-blonde pixie cut, demanded that all eight of her dancers shave their heads. Iniba recalled that this was Madonna's way of testing their commitment and willingness to go the extra mile for her.
Reflecting on her experience, Iniba expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Madonna despite the challenging working conditions. She even referred to The Girlie Show Tour as her "best job ever," highlighting the privilege of performing alongside the hardest working woman in the industry.
For Iniba, dancing for Madonna was a pinnacle moment in her career. At the age of 23, she contemplated retirement, feeling that she had achieved something extraordinary by touring with the music icon. However, she eventually returned to work, going on to graduate from UCLA and pursue other successful ventures, including becoming a Fly Girl on Fox's In Living Color.
Madonna's dedication to perfection and her relentless work ethic left a lasting impression on Iniba. "If I had worked with her, I learned really quickly. I'm never late. I'm always early," she admitted. Iniba's commitment to punctuality has become so ingrained that she often finds herself wasting time by arriving excessively early.
Despite the strict rules and demands, the former back-up dancer expressed deep gratitude to Madonna for the invaluable lessons she learned and the opportunity to share the stage with a legendary performer. In 2019, Iniba affectionately reminisced, "Touring the world with you is still at the top of my list of greatest moments of my life."
While Madonna continues to captivate audiences with her performances, her recent health issues have caused some setbacks. After being hospitalized in June 2021 for a serious bacterial infection, the 65-year-old artist is set to embark on her 78-date Celebration Tour, starting with a concert in Denmark's Royal Arena this Wednesday. Fans and critics alike hope for a smooth experience this time, as previous knee and hip injuries forced her to cancel several shows during her Madame X Tour in 2019-2020.
As Madonna prepares to take the stage once again, her dedication to her craft shines through. Despite the challenges and demands she placed on her performers, it's clear that her influence and work ethic have left a lasting impact on those lucky enough to share the spotlight with the Queen of Pop.
