In a recent announcement by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it was revealed that a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes has affected multiple states. James Powel and Gabe Hauari of USA Today reported that two individuals have tragically lost their lives, while 28 others have been hospitalized across 32 states due to this outbreak.

The CDC has urged consumers to exercise caution if they have recently purchased whole or pre-cut cantaloupes or fruit salads containing cantaloupe. It is essential to check the labeling and best-by dates to ensure safety. If there is any uncertainty regarding the product's origin or if it has been subject to a recall, it is advisable to discard or return it immediately.

Minnesota has reported the highest number of infections so far, with 13 confirmed cases. Hauari and Powel mentioned that the latest reported illness occurred on November 10. Authorities have emphasized that identifying the origins and scope of an outbreak can often take weeks.

Certain companies and brands have issued recalls for their cantaloupes. Pacific Trellis Fruit and Delcinea Farms, for instance, recalled approximately 5,000 cases of their "Malichita" brand cantaloupes. Consumers in California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin should be particularly cautious if they come across this brand of cantaloupe and refrain from consuming it.

Additional companies that have initiated cantaloupe recalls include CG Dallas, Sofi Produce/Trufresh, Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company, and Aldi grocer. The latter has recalled cantaloupes, cut cantaloupes, and pineapple spears with best-by dates ranging between October 27 and October 31.

The CDC advises anyone who may have purchased cantaloupe related to these recalls to dispose of them promptly. Salmonella can lead to severe illness and even death, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with compromised immune systems.

As investigation and containment efforts continue, it is crucial for consumers to stay updated on any further developments regarding this outbreak. Regularly checking official CDC advisories and staying informed through reliable news sources can help ensure safety during this time.
