Reckitt and Mead Johnson Nutrition, the makers of Enfamil and Nutramigen, have issued a voluntary recall for more than 675,000 cans of Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder. The recall comes as a precautionary measure following product sample testing outside of the United States, which indicated a potential risk of bacterial contamination.

The affected product, Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula, is specifically designed for infants with cow's milk allergy. Only cans manufactured in June 2023, with sizes of 12.6 and 19.8 ounces, are included in the recall. The recall does not extend to Nutramigen's liquid formulas or other nutrition products.

The recall is a result of concerns over possible contamination by Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacterium commonly found in dry goods such as powdered milk, infant formula, and herbal tea. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that Cronobacter sakazakii infections are rare but can pose a significant threat, especially to babies under two months old, premature babies, those with weakened immune systems, and adults over 65 years old.

While both Reckitt/Mead Johnson and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially tested samples from the batch in question, all tests came back negative. However, out of an abundance of caution and a commitment to providing safe nutrition to vulnerable infants, Reckitt and Mead Johnson decided to recall select batches of Nutramigen.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Reckitt and Mead Johnson Nutrition assured parents that they can continue to use their products with confidence, including other Nutramigen powder formula batches. The company has emphasized its understanding of the responsibility it holds in providing essential nutrition for infants and stated that there can be no compromises when it comes to this vulnerable population.

As of now, no reports of illnesses linked to the recalled baby formula have been received by Reckitt and Mead Johnson Nutrition. The recall is a proactive measure aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of infants who rely on Nutramigen for their nutritional needs.

It is essential for parents and caregivers to be aware of this recall and check the expiration dates on cans of Nutramigen to determine if they are affected by the recall. If in possession of recalled formula, it is advised to discontinue use and return or dispose of the product as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Reckitt and Mead Johnson Nutrition urges consumers with any questions or concerns regarding the recall to contact their customer service team for assistance. The company remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality in their products to protect the health of infants and young children.
