Boron: The Essential Micronutrient for Overall Health

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the lesser-known micronutrient group of trace elements, and boron is one such element that deserves the spotlight. Registered dietitian Amy Davis, RD, LDN, from FRESH Communications, explains that boron is crucial for several bodily functions and is highly bioavailable, meaning it is easily absorbed and utilized by the body. The body absorbs roughly 85-90% of the boron consumed, primarily in the intestinal tract. Boron accumulates in tissues such as hair, nails, and bones and is excreted primarily through the kidneys.

The health benefits of boron are plentiful and diverse. It supports increased magnesium absorption, reduced inflammation, and improved antioxidant activity. One of the most notable benefits of boron is its positive impact on bone health. Studies have shown that daily supplementation of 3 milligrams (mg) of boron can improve bone health significantly.

Furthermore, boron has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which can lower the risk of heart disease by reducing c-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the blood. It also shows promising results in inhibiting cancer cell growth and protecting healthy cells from genetic mutations that can lead to cancer.

Boron's anti-inflammatory effects extend to joint health, where it has been shown to manage arthritis pain and improve joint mobility and flexibility. Additionally, boron supports the central nervous system and has been associated with cognitive decline prevention.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the acceptable range for daily boron consumption is estimated to be between 1-13 mg, with many aiming for around 3 mg. The tolerable upper limit is 20 mg per day, beyond which negative side effects may occur.

Thankfully, boron is naturally abundant in various plant-based foods, eliminating the need for supplementation. Prune juice, avocado, grapes, peaches, apples, pears, peanuts, and legumes are all excellent sources of boron. Prune juice, topping the list, contains 1.4 mg per cup, while avocado contains 1.1 mg per half cup.

It is important to note that using household cleaner borax to supplement boron intake is highly discouraged, as it is not safe for human consumption and can lead to serious health complications.
