In efforts to mitigate potential fan violence, authorities have banned full-strength beer during England's Euro 2024 opener against Serbia. The match, set to take place at Schalke's Veltins Arena, will be closely monitored due to an escalated security risk level, prompting the deployment of an additional 1,300 officers. The decision to enforce a ban on full-strength beer was motivated by concerns of clashes between Serbian ultras and Three Lions supporters.
Initially, fans had anticipated enjoying 4.8 per cent strength Bitburger Premium at the stadium, but it has now been replaced with a lower 2.5 per cent alternative. Additionally, attendees will be restricted to purchasing only two pints at a time. The stringent measures aim to reduce the likelihood of alcohol-fueled altercations during the highly anticipated fixture.
According to a police source cited by The Sun, the lower-strength beer available will be comparable to a Radler, commonly known as shandy in England. Gelsenkirchen's police spokesman, Stephan Knipp, emphasized that the restrictions on beer consumption will solely apply to the England game, while other matches at the stadium will offer the standard 4.8 per cent beverage. Moreover, fans will not be permitted to consume alcohol in the city's main square, Heinrich-Konig-Platz.
Euro 2024's managing director, Andreas Schar, highlighted that preventive measures were implemented following the categorization of the match as high-risk. With Serbia making a return to the tournament after a hiatus, the dynamics between the fan bases remain uncertain, warranting increased security measures to maintain order.
The decision to prohibit full-strength beer has sparked a mix of reactions on social media. Some users have humorously suggested alternative substances, while others speculate on the practicality and effectiveness of the restriction. As tensions brew ahead of the fixture, authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
