The Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer have revealed a fresh iteration of their Indigenous History Month logo, designed by Austin Aan'yas Harry, a digital artist and member of the Squamish Nation with ancestral ties to the Namgis Nation. The debut of the logo coincides with the Indigenous Peoples Celebration match against St. Louis City FC on June 29.
The updated logo symbolizes the duality seen in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC logo, combining elements like the dark blue serpent head representing mountains and the light blue serpent head symbolizing ocean waves. The sea serpent's journey from ocean to the peak of Stawamus Chief is depicted, connecting the sea and sky, with supernatural creatures like Sínulkhay and the Thunderbird featuring prominently.
Ahead of the Indigenous Peoples Celebration match, Indigenous performers will entertain the crowd both before kickoff and during halftime, with several performers associated with Land Back Records, a platform supporting Indigenous artists. The event will also include an Indigenous Artists Market and a pre-match Soccer Jamboree for Indigenous youth.
In addition to the logo unveiling, the Whitecaps recently inaugurated two new mini-pitches in Indigenous communities in British Columbia, bringing the total to eight. The team has been active in youth soccer tournaments and learning initiatives throughout the month of June.
Social media reactions to the new logo varied, with some fans expressing a desire for a different font while others praised the design and hoped to see similar initiatives from other Cascadian clubs.
