San Diego FC is on the brink of appointing former United States Under-20 national team head coach Mikey Varas as their first-ever manager, according to sources. While the deal is yet to be fully confirmed, Varas is set to lead San Diego into their inaugural season in MLS, which kicks off in 2025.

Varas, who most recently served as an assistant coach on Gregg Berhalter's staff during the Copa América, will take on the role of interim manager for the senior U.S. national team for upcoming friendlies in September. His coaching experience includes leading the Under-20 national team to victory in the 2022 CONCACAF Championship and securing a spot in the Olympics for the United States for the first time since 2008.

Prior to his national team duties, Varas worked as an assistant coach at FC Dallas under Luchi Gonzalez, showcasing a steady rise in his coaching career. San Diego FC, in preparation for their debut season, has already finalized deals with five players, including standout signings like Mexican star Hirving "Chucky" Lozano and Northern Ireland captain Paddy McNair, demonstrating a mix of international talent in their squad.

Social media reactions to Varas' appointment varied, with some questioning the decision and others defending his track record and potential. While there are concerns over Varas' lack of experience leading a senior team, many supporters believe in his capabilities based on his past achievements with the US youth national teams.

With Varas set to take over as San Diego's manager and the team shaping up their squad for the upcoming season, the focus now shifts towards how the club will perform under his leadership in MLS and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates on San Diego FC and Mikey Varas as they gear up for their MLS debut in 2025.
