In a season characterized by disappointment, the Washington Commanders may be looking to make a change at quarterback. Head coach Ron Rivera revealed on Tuesday that the team is still evaluating their options and will announce the starting quarterback on Wednesday.

Sam Howell, who started the season as the team's quarterback, has been benched in the last two games in favor of Jacoby Brissett. Brissett's presence has injected some life into the offense, leading to improved results. However, Rivera emphasized that Howell's recent performance hasn't altered his belief in the young quarterback's potential.

Rivera stated, "No, it doesn't. And he's got a very good body of work. It's been tough the last couple of weeks. The length of the season is probably wearing on him as well as the number of plays he's had and the number of hits he's absorbed."

In their Week 15 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Howell completed 11-of-26 passes for 102 yards, along with a touchdown and an interception. His struggles continued in the subsequent game against the New York Jets, where he went 6-of-22 for 56 yards, with two interceptions. Notably, Howell leads the league in sacks taken this season, enduring a total of 60 so far.

On the other hand, Brissett has made the most of his opportunities off the bench. He completed 8-of-10 passes for 124 yards, with two touchdowns against the Rams. In the following game against the Jets, he finished 10-of-13 for 100 yards, including a touchdown. Brissett's efficient performances have given Coach Rivera an alternative worth considering.

Rivera also acknowledged that Howell may be feeling the pressure to perform at an elite level, stating, "Right now, you watch him and he's trying to make the perfect play. I think he's reading a little bit more into some of the things that he sees out there. And I think he's just got to settle in and trust what he's seeing initially and stick with the offense."

Through 15 starts this season, Howell has completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 3,624 yards, with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. While his stat line showcases moments of promise, his struggles under pressure and recent decline have raised concerns within the coaching staff.

As the Commanders prepare to face their remaining opponents, the decision regarding the quarterback position will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team's future. With the season coming to a close, Washington hopes to find a solution that will ignite their offense and provide a spark for upcoming seasons.

Only time will tell which quarterback will lead the Washington Commanders in their final games of the season, but for now, the franchise remains committed to evaluating their options and making the best decision for the team's success.
