In a joint statement issued on Monday, the NHL and NHLPA announced that Valeri Nichushkin, forward for the Colorado Avalanche, has entered the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program. This comes after Nichushkin did not play in Saturday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and was absent from Monday morning's practice at Bell Centre.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar stated that Nichushkin was feeling unwell prior to the game in Toronto. In a statement released by the team, Nichushkin confirmed his decision to seek help and enter the players assistance program. He expressed his determination to address his issues and prevent any negative outcomes, thanking his family, friends, the Avalanche organization, and the fans for their support. Nichushkin's goal is to return to the ice and rejoin his teammates as soon as possible.

This is the second time in eight months that Nichushkin has taken leave from the Avalanche. Previously, he missed the final five games of a first-round playoff series against the Seattle Kraken for undisclosed personal reasons. The organization warmly welcomed his return during media day before the start of training camp.

Coach Bednar, when asked about the uncertainty surrounding Nichushkin at the beginning of the season, expressed confidence in the player's well-being. He noted Nichushkin's positive progress during the offseason and dismissed any concerns about his performance. Bednar also mentioned that the team had not needed to address any issues with Nichushkin or Samuel Girard, who had also taken time off for similar reasons.

Nichushkin's absence from the lineup adds to the Avs' challenges, as he has been having a career season with 22 goals and 42 points in 40 games. Since the birth of his daughter in early November, Nichushkin's performance has surged, placing him among the league's top scorers. His 21 goals since November 8 rank third in the league, contributing significantly to the Avalanche's recent success despite the absence of other key players.

Nichushkin is now the second player from the Avalanche to enter the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program this season, joining Girard, who spent a month away from the team seeking treatment for severe anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse.

As Nichushkin takes the necessary steps towards his well-being and recovery, the Avalanche and their fans remain supportive and hopeful for his return to the ice.
