FORT MYERS, Fla. - In an intense semifinal game at the Fort Myers Tip-Off, the No. 24-ranked Virginia Cavaliers were giving the Wisconsin Badgers a run for their money. With just over 12 minutes remaining, the Badgers were looking for a spark to regain control of the game. That spark came from an unexpected source - junior forward Carter Gilmore.
At 6-foot-8, Gilmore isn't known for his flashy plays or scoring ability. He is a key role player who often goes unnoticed on the court. But in a critical moment, Gilmore rose to the occasion and delivered an electrifying one-handed tip-slam, grabbing the rebound over a UVA defender and throwing it down with authority. This incredible display of athleticism brought the crowd to their feet and set the tone for the rest of the game.
"That definitely set the tone for the rest of the game," said junior guard Chucky Hepburn, reflecting on Gilmore's dunk. The Badgers went on to score 11 unanswered points following the highlight play, demoralizing the Cavaliers and securing a comfortable lead.
While Gilmore's contributions may not always show up in the box score, his impact on the game cannot be understated. As a former walk-on, he has earned his place on the team through hard work and dedication. Head coach Greg Gard recognized his value and awarded him a scholarship after his freshman season.
Gilmore's offensive production has been questioned by critics, with limited shot attempts and a hesitancy to shoot. However, those who understand the game acknowledge his defensive prowess, leadership, and basketball IQ. He brings energy and grit to the court, making the Badgers a better team overall.
"For people that give him a lot of crap, back in the Midwest, specifically Wisconsin, don't understand the game of basketball - what he does to help this team," said Gard, defending Gilmore. "He battles. He just brings some energy and some grit to him. He plays hard."
Beyond his collegiate career, Gilmore's high school achievements showcase his talent and potential. As the Classic Eight Player of the Year and a first-team All-State selection, he averaged an impressive 26 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists per game at Arrowhead High School. He turned down multiple mid-major scholarship offers to walk on at Wisconsin, and his dedication has paid off as he continues to contribute to the team's success.
Gilmore's impact goes beyond the basketball court, as his former AAU teammate Reece Beekman of UVA attests. "He brings a lot of energy and physicality for their team," said Beekman. "I love watching him play and bring good stuff to their team."
In Monday's game against Virginia, Carter Gilmore demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion and provide the spark his team needed. His highlight slam will remain etched in the memories of Wisconsin fans as a testament to the valuable contributions made by unsung heroes like Gilmore.
