The University of Washington (UW) and Washington State University (WSU) have announced an agreement in principle to extend the prestigious Apple Cup football series for an additional five years, ensuring the continuation of the historic rivalry through at least 2028.

As per the agreement, the next Apple Cup match-up is scheduled to take place on September 14, 2024, at Lumen Field in Seattle. The subsequent four games will alternate between the campuses of UW and WSU, with Pullman hosting the game in 2025, Seattle in 2026, Pullman in 2027, and Seattle in 2028. While the terms of the agreement are still being finalized, both universities are committed to upholding the cherished tradition.

President Ana Mari Cauce of the University of Washington expressed her excitement about the extension, stating, "The Apple Cup tradition is beloved by Huskies, Cougars, and football fans across Washington and beyond, so one of my priorities has been to ensure that it continues into this new era. I'm thrilled that we'll be able to continue this tradition and to kick off the new era at Lumen Field before returning to each campus. This is a win for our fans, our universities, and the state of Washington."

WSU President Kirk Schulz echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the significance of the Apple Cup as one of the oldest and most renowned rivalries in collegiate athletics. Schulz stated, "For more than a century, fans across the state have been circling the Apple Cup date on their calendars. We are pleased that we will be able to continue this beloved tradition for future generations of Coug fans."

Since 1963, the winner of the Apple Cup has been awarded the prestigious Apple Cup Trophy by the Governor of Washington. This year's Apple Cup, scheduled for November 25 in Seattle, will mark the 115th meeting between UW and WSU, further cementing the rich history of this fierce rivalry that began in 1900.

WSU Director of Athletics Pat Chun expressed his gratitude for the efforts to secure Lumen Field for the 2024 Apple Cup, noting the venue's status as one of the premier sports venues. Chun stated, "While there is certainly passion on both sides, there is a common desire to represent the great state of Washington in the annual showdown. We are appreciative of this collaboration with Troy Dannen and the University of Washington to ensure the game continues for years to come."

University of Washington Director of Athletics Troy Dannen emphasized the importance of the Apple Cup as an integral part of the universities' identities, expressing gratitude to WSU and Pat Chun for reaching a mutually beneficial arrangement. Dannen stated, "This game means so much to so many, and we are grateful for this collaboration to continue the more than a century tradition of football between the schools."

The extension of the Apple Cup football series between the University of Washington and Washington State University ensures that this fierce rivalry will continue to capture the attention and passion of football fans in Washington for years to come.
