In a strategic move to empower its student-athletes, the University of Michigan Athletics has announced its investment in the growth of its in-house NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) program. The initiative includes the creation of an executive general manager (EGM) position in partnership with Altius Sports Partners and a senior manager of business development in collaboration with Learfield and Michigan Sports Properties.
This collaboration between two industry powerhouses aims to further amplify Michigan's already substantial success in the evolving NIL landscape. The university's commitment to its student-athletes is reflected in the establishment of roles that provide specialized expertise, offering a centralized point of contact and access to maximize NIL opportunities.
Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics, expressed his satisfaction with the new agreement, stating, "The dedicated roles through ASP and Learfield provide a crucial step forward in supporting and empowering our student-athletes while combining three powerful brands aligned to capitalize on the dynamic opportunities within the realm of NIL."
Altius Sports Partners, a leading advisor to collegiate athletics departments, will oversee the recruitment, training, and supervision of the in-house NIL EGM position. The EGM will work closely with the athletics department to enhance Michigan's existing NIL program, educate stakeholders, and increase awareness of NIL initiatives within the business community and U-M collectives.
Casey Schwab, CEO of Altius Sports Partners, expressed excitement about the collaboration with the University of Michigan, emphasizing how it prioritizes comprehensive athlete support. He further added that their collaboration aims to provide diverse opportunities for Michigan's athletes in the NIL landscape.
Working in tandem with Altius Sports Partners, Learfield, a prominent media and technology company powering college athletics, will contribute its expertise through the senior manager of business development position. This role will serve as the NIL subject matter expert for sponsorships, working closely with local brands, Michigan Sports Properties, and Athletics to identify opportunities for campaigns featuring student-athletes while safeguarding Michigan IP.
The University of Michigan Athletics is recognized as an innovator in NIL, having activated a group licensing deal with its student-athletes, making it the first athletic department to do so. The university's INFLCR-based VICTORS Program boasts the largest NIL marketplace in the country.
Michigan's investment in the in-house NIL program further solidifies its commitment to supporting student-athletes. Through initiatives like the Academic Success Program, Athletics Career Center, and Leadership Development Programs, Michigan provides year-round opportunities for student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field.
With this move, Michigan is at the forefront of the NIL landscape, demonstrating its dedication to empowering athletes and capitalizing on the dynamic opportunities offered by NIL. The university continues to set a standard for other institutions, with Altius Sports Partners aiming to identify candidates who share their vision and commitment to empowering athletes in this ever-changing landscape.
