In a surprising turn of events, the Florida State Seminoles, who finished the season with an impressive 13-0 record, were snubbed by the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee. However, Coach Mike Norvell remains determined to lead his team to victory as they prepare for a matchup against the two-time defending champion Georgia Bulldogs in the Capital One Orange Bowl on December 30.
Despite missing out on the CFP, Coach Norvell expressed pride in the hard work and dedication displayed by his players. He believes that the Orange Bowl provides them with a final opportunity to define the 2023 Seminoles team.
The Seminoles' 19 consecutive wins stands as the second-longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Their unbeaten record earned them the right to compete in the ACC championship, which they won, securing their spot in the prestigious Orange Bowl.
On the other hand, the Georgia Bulldogs entered the season as the top-ranked team but suffered a setback with a loss to Alabama in the SEC title game. This defeat resulted in the Bulldogs becoming the first No. 1 team in the CFP rankings to fall out of the top four during Championship Week. However, with six consecutive bowl game victories under their belt, the Bulldogs will aim to reclaim their winning momentum in the Orange Bowl.
Another major development in the college football landscape was the selection of the highest-ranked Group of 5 team for an automatic bid into the New Year's Six. This year, the undefeated Liberty Flames emerged as the Group of 5 representative. They clinched the bid as the first-ever Conference USA champion in the College Football Playoff era. Despite their weak schedule, the Flames finished at No. 23 in the final CFP rankings, securing a matchup against No. 8 Oregon in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on January 1.
The other New Year's Six games will witness clashes between teams from the Big Ten and SEC conferences. No. 9 Missouri, led by Coach Eli Drinkwitz, will take on No. 7 Ohio State at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on December 29. This marks Missouri's first appearance in a New Year's Six bowl in nine seasons. Meanwhile, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on December 30 will feature a matchup between No. 11 Ole Miss and No. 10 Penn State.
It is worth noting that the remaining two New Year's Six games were determined earlier when the CFP semifinal matchups were announced. No. 1 Michigan will face No. 4 Alabama in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential, while No. 2 Washington will take on No. 3 Texas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
As the stage is set for an exciting lineup of bowl games, college football fans eagerly anticipate the outcome of these highly anticipated matchups, which will showcase the best teams from across the nation.
