Texas football proved their prowess on the field as they handed Iowa State a resounding 26-16 defeat at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday. The victory came in response to Iowa State offensive lineman Jarrod Hufford's bold statements, in which he boasted about his team's past success against the Longhorns and took jabs at their culture.
Hufford, who had a 3-1 record against Texas in his career, confidently declared, "They are going to come in here on senior night in the dark... They don't have a good record here." He also dismissed the Longhorns' highly touted recruits and criticized their perceived arrogance. However, Texas took these words to heart and used them as motivation for the game.
In a post-game interview, UT head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed Hufford's comments, saying, "I thought our players did a nice job of staying focused on what we needed to do." Sarkisian emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and not engaging in unnecessary trash talk.
Two Texas defensive tackles, T'Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy, took particular offense to Hufford's words. After an outstanding defensive performance that held Iowa State to just nine rushing yards on 21 attempts, Sweat and Murphy wasted no time responding on social media. "9 yards rushing... that's all. Don't write no check you can't cash little guy," tweeted Murphy. Sweat chimed in, adding, "9 rushing that's tuff."
Sarkisian, showing support for his players, made Sweat and Murphy the team captains for the game. He remarked, "You want to call out our culture, I wanted them to look those guys in the eyes at midfield." This decision showcased the Longhorns' unity and determination to prove themselves on the field.
With the victory over Iowa State, Texas looks to carry its momentum into Week 13. They will close out the regular season with a matchup against Texas Tech on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC, providing another opportunity for the Longhorns to showcase their skills and end the season on a high note.
Texas football demonstrated their resilience and ability to silence their opponents with a convincing win against Iowa State. The Longhorns proved that actions speak louder than words and now have their sights set on finishing the regular season on a strong note against Texas Tech.
