In a shocking turn of events, a player from the Sacramento Kings' G League affiliate and his girlfriend have been arrested in connection with the killing of a woman whose remains were discovered near Las Vegas. Chance Comanche, 27, and Sakari Harnden, 19, will be facing charges of murder and kidnapping in relation to the death of 23-year-old Marayna Rodgers.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police announced on Sunday that Comanche and Harnden will be charged in the murder of Rodgers, who had been reported missing on December 7th. Her remains were subsequently found in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson. Authorities have not yet established a cause of death or provided any details regarding the motive, but investigators suspected foul play and gathered sufficient evidence to make the arrests.
According to law enforcement officials, Harnden was a close friend of Rodgers, who worked as a medical assistant and hailed from Washington state. On December 5th, Rodgers had plans to meet with Harnden, who brought Comanche along. However, further details about the circumstances of the incident have not been disclosed.
Harnden was taken into custody on Wednesday in Las Vegas and is currently being held on a $500,000 bond. Comanche, on the other hand, was apprehended on Friday by the FBI in Sacramento, California. He is being held without bond and is awaiting extradition to Nevada. Comanche is scheduled to appear in a Sacramento court on Tuesday.
The Clark County prosecutor's office in Nevada has not provided additional information at this time, and it is unclear if either Comanche or Harnden have legal representation. Calls made to the public defender's offices in Las Vegas and Sacramento have gone unanswered.
Before his arrest, Comanche had been playing for the Stockton Kings, the NBA G League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings. In 13 games, he had been averaging 14 points and seven rebounds. Comanche, who primarily played as a power forward and center, had previously played college basketball at the University of Arizona from 2015 to 2017 before declaring for the NBA draft. Although he went undrafted, he signed a free-agent contract with the Portland Trail Blazers in April. However, his tenure with the team was short-lived, as he only played one game. Comanche later joined the Sacramento Kings, but was waived just 10 days after signing, leading him to join the Stockton Kings.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are determined to seek justice for Marayna Rodgers and her grieving family. The Sacramento Kings organization and the G League have not released any official statements regarding Comanche's arrest at this time.
