In Saturday's practice at KeyBank Center, the Buffalo Sabres received some unfortunate news regarding goaltender Eric Comrie. General Manager Kevyn Adams announced that Comrie is week-to-week due to a lower-body injury. The injury occurred during Friday's game against the New Jersey Devils, making it Comrie's third start of the season.
Adams stated, "He had an MRI first thing this morning. Looks like he's going to miss some time... you won't know until the first 48 hours and you kind of get more information. But that's what it looks like as of now." With Comrie out, the Sabres have called up Devin Cooley from the Rochester Americans to serve as the backup for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in Sunday's game against the Colorado Avalanche.
Unfortunately, the team is also dealing with another setback as defenseman Connor Clifton has received a two-game suspension from the NHL Department of Player Safety. Clifton's hit on New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier in Friday's game led to the disciplinary action. Clifton expressed remorse for the incident, acknowledging that he mistimed the hit and unintentionally made head contact. He emphasized the importance of player safety and pledged to improve in the future.
In Clifton's absence, Jacob Bryson is expected to take his place in the lineup for Sunday's matchup. Bryson, who had been a healthy scratch in the team's first eight games, will have an opportunity to make his season debut. Coach Don Granato praised Bryson's performance during training camp, noting his increased maturity and competitiveness.
Additionally, there were some line adjustments during Saturday's practice. Zach Benson joined Jordan Greenway and Tage Thompson on a line, as Granato aimed to balance the scoring threats across three lines. Granato commended Benson's hockey sense and versatility, highlighting his high hockey IQ despite his age and experience level.
The team also unveiled a new addition to their lineup, goaltender Devin Cooley. Known for his impressive performances in Rochester, Cooley returned to Buffalo after earning the trust and respect of his teammates and coaching staff during training camp. Cooley showcased his enthusiasm by revealing his helmet in the locker room, adorned with the iconic Sabres "slug" logo from the 2006-07 season.
Looking ahead, the Sabres will face the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday afternoon for Hockey Halloween at KeyBank Center. The first 5,000 fans attending the game will receive commemorative player cards. The Sabres will don their black-and-red third jerseys for the game, adding to the festive atmosphere of the event.
With Comrie's absence and Clifton's suspension, the Sabres will face challenges in their upcoming games. However, the team remains optimistic and determined to put forth a strong performance against the talented Colorado Avalanche squad.
