Red Bull Unveils RB20 Car for the 2024 F1 Season, Drawing Inspiration from Mercedes

Red Bull has officially revealed its RB20 car for the upcoming 2024 Formula 1 season. The car's design seems to have incorporated some ideas previously seen on Mercedes' W14 2023 car, indicating a potential shift in approach for the team. Images captured during a shakedown running at Silverstone's on-site hotel gave a glimpse of the RB20's features, including long cooling gulleys that run backward from the halo along the engine cover.
Notably, the RB20's design showcases similarities with the Mercedes W14, even after Mercedes abandoned its 'zeropod' sidepod design in favor of Red Bull's downwash solution. The RB20 also features a vertical sidepod radiator inlet and heavily undercut sidepods, reminiscent of the Mercedes W13's 'zeropod' design. However, it retains the downwash sidepod solutions further down and maintains similarities in the nose and front-end parts from the previous season.
A closer look at the RB20 reveals a larger and simpler floor, which purposely conceals the complex Venturi tunnel floors needed to comply with F1's ground-effect rules. This strategic move seeks to keep the car's crucial aerodynamic device secret from rival teams until testing begins in 2024. Similarly, the Mercedes-inspired elements beneath the RB20's sidepods could be an attempt to confuse competitors, similar to what Alfa Romeo did with their 2023 car's fake floor edge.
The RB20's livery remains largely unchanged from the RB19, featuring the team's familiar color scheme since 2016, with a darker shade of yellow introduced in 2017. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner acknowledged the evolutionary nature of the RB20, highlighting the team's commitment to pushing boundaries and the exquisite attention to detail in the car's design.
Drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez also expressed their thoughts on the RB20's design. Verstappen was impressed with the initial design drawings he saw during last year's Abu Dhabi season finale, praising the team for taking a different direction. Perez commended Red Bull's bravery in significantly changing the car's concept.
Despite the excitement surrounding the RB20's reveal, the ongoing legal matter involving allegations against Christian Horner was not addressed during the launch event. Media questions regarding the investigation were restricted.
Red Bull will be using the RB20 for the Bahrain test next week and the season opener next month, with the potential for further changes before the F1 season begins. As the team continues to strive for success, the RB20 represents an evolution in design and strategic choices for Red Bull in their quest for the Formula 1 championship in 2024.
