The Portland Trail Blazers are gearing up for their highly anticipated season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers in Tinseltown. However, despite some optimism surrounding the team following the Damian Lillard trade, NBA insider Marc Stein's power rankings have placed the Blazers at a disappointing 28th position.
Following their decision not to grant franchise legend Damian Lillard's trade request to Miami, the Trail Blazers managed to secure a significant haul of assets. In return for keeping Lillard, they acquired Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, and Toumani Camara. Additionally, they acquired multiple first-round picks including ones from Golden State in 2024, Milwaukee and Boston in 2029. The Blazers also obtained pick swaps with Milwaukee in 2028 and 2030.
Despite the promising acquisitions, the team finds itself ranked near the bottom of the league in Stein's power rankings. Only the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards are placed below the Blazers.
One of the key factors contributing to the low ranking is the limited number of returning rotation players from last season. With only five legitimate rotation players, including Jerami Grant, Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpe, Matisse Thybulle, and Jabari Walker returning, Portland's roster underwent significant changes.
Nevertheless, the limited expectations placed on the Blazers could work in their favor. With little pressure and room to grow, the team has an opportunity to surprise many opponents throughout the season and potentially play spoiler in important games.
The upcoming season holds promise for the Blazers, with rookie Scoot Henderson already making waves in the media as a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award. Additionally, players like Jerami Grant, Malcolm Brogdon, and Robert Williams are expected to generate trade interest, ensuring that the Blazers will remain in the spotlight.
As the Blazers prepare to face the Clippers in their season opener, the team is determined to prove their worth on the court and rise from their current low ranking. Though immediate success may not be expected, the Blazers have the potential to make significant strides and cause upsets throughout the season.
Stay tuned as the Portland Trail Blazers aim to defy the odds and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.
