Argentine midfielder Sebastián Blanco has announced his departure from the Portland Timbers after a successful seven-year stint with the club. Blanco shared the news on Instagram, following a report by Tom Bogert of The Athletic.

In a heartfelt message to fans on Instagram, Blanco expressed his gratitude for being a part of the Timbers community. "After 7 years, the day we didn't want came. The time to say goodbye, unfortunately it is not as we wish or deserved, face to face. But there are decisions I have to accept," Blanco wrote. He further added, "It has been an honor and a pride to be part of this community, of this club, of this beautiful history, and an enormous privilege to wear this jersey."

Blanco, 35, joined the Timbers in 2017 from Argentine first division club San Lorenzo. During his time with Portland, Blanco made 176 appearances (131 starts), scoring 41 goals and providing 51 assists. His dynamic play style and competitive drive made him a fan favorite. Blanco played a crucial role in the Timbers' journey to two MLS Cup finals, in 2018 and 2021.

The Timbers' General Manager, Ned Grabavoy, expressed his gratitude towards Blanco, recognizing his immense impact on and off the field. "I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Sebastián, and on behalf of everyone within the club, for his seven incredible years in Portland. Few players have made as great an impact on and off the field, and he will unquestionably go down as one of the greatest to ever wear the green and gold," Grabavoy stated.

Blanco's final two seasons with the Timbers were marred by injuries, particularly chronic knee issues that limited his playing time during the 2023 season. He made only 17 appearances, with two starts, totaling 427 minutes on the field.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Blanco will seek other playing opportunities or retire from the game altogether. With his contract set to expire, Blanco will have the freedom to explore new possibilities.

Blanco concluded his statement by expressing his appreciation to the fans, former teammates, and team staff. He acknowledged the challenges he faced and the support he received throughout his tenure with the Timbers. While The Athletic reports that the Timbers plan to honor Blanco in the upcoming season, no official confirmation was mentioned in Blanco's farewell statement.

Sebastián Blanco will forever be remembered as a legend in the green and gold, leaving a lasting impact on the Portland Timbers and their passionate fanbase.
