In a major shake-up of their roster, the Phoenix Mercury have announced a trade with the Chicago Sky that brings in three-time All-Star and 2021 WNBA Finals MVP, Kahleah Copper. The news, first reported by The Next's Howard Megdal, highlights the Mercury's determination to revamp their perimeter around future Hall of Famer Diana Taurasi.

As part of the trade, the Mercury will also acquire the exclusive negotiating rights of Morgan Bertsch. In exchange, they will be sending forwards Brianna Turner and Michaela Onyenwere, along with four draft picks, including the No. 3 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. The Sky had previously traded their own first-round selection for this year. Phoenix will be sending their 2024 and 2026 first-round picks, as well as Chicago's 2025 second-round pick back to the Sky. Additionally, the Mercury will have the rights to a 2026 second-round pick swap.

Expressing his excitement about the deal, Mercury general manager Nick U'Ren said, "The opportunity to add a player of Kahleah's caliber in the prime of her career is rare. She is one of the most dynamic and athletic players in our league, with a true knack for scoring the ball. She is also a fierce competitor, proven champion, and the ultimate two-way player."

Copper, who is 29 years old, had an exceptional season, averaging a career-high 18.7 points per game while shooting 45% overall and 40% from beyond the arc. Her scoring prowess will undoubtedly bolster the Mercury's backcourt, joining the recently signed former Washington Mystics point guard Natasha Cloud.

The Phoenix Mercury have wasted no time making moves under the leadership of new owner Mat Ishbia, general manager Nick U'Ren, and head coach Nate Tibbetts. The acquisition of Kahleah Copper and the sign-and-trade deal that brought in forward Rebecca Allen from the Connecticut Sun demonstrate their aggressive approach in the offseason.

Rebecca Allen, who spent last season with the Sun, played in all 40 games and made 27 starts, contributing 6.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and a team-leading 1.3 blocks per game. Her presence will add depth to the Mercury's lineup.

Interestingly, Copper will join the Mercury alongside current guard Sophie Cunningham, with whom she has a history. During the 2021 WNBA Finals, Copper's MVP performances led the Chicago Sky to a four-game victory over the Phoenix Mercury. Cunningham and Copper had a memorable run-in on the court during the series, fueling their competitive rivalry.

With these notable acquisitions and strong existing talent, the Phoenix Mercury are shaping up to be a menacing force in the upcoming WNBA season. The dynamic presence of Kahleah Copper and the talented additions to their roster position them as strong contenders for a championship title.
