In a move to bolster their frontline depth, the Philadelphia 76ers have signed free agent Kenneth Lofton Jr. to a two-way contract, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The signing comes as the team prepares to waive Javonte Smart.
Lofton Jr., who spent the past two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, brings a strong resume and potential to the Sixers' roster. In his rookie year, the 6-7 forward/center earned the NBA G League Rookie of the Year award while playing for the Memphis Hustle. He showcased his skills by averaging an impressive 20.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
The highlight of Lofton Jr.'s NBA career so far came last season when he showcased his scoring ability in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, putting up an impressive 42 points. A video circulating on YouTube also demonstrates his ability to challenge top talents like Victor Wembanyama in the 2021 FIBA under-19 world cup.
Known for his size and strength, Lofton Jr. utilizes his imposing frame to his advantage, carving out space and punishing defenders near the rim. With a low center of gravity, he displays a soft touch with both hands and aggressiveness on the glass as a rebounder.
The signing of Lofton Jr. fills a void in the Sixers' lineup, particularly in the center position. The team's G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, has been lacking a true center for most of the season, and Lofton Jr.'s addition provides depth behind star Joel Embiid and promising prospect Paul Reed.
As a two-way contract player, Lofton Jr. will have the opportunity to split his time between the Sixers and the Blue Coats, allowing him to further develop his skills and potentially earn a more permanent role on the NBA roster.
The Philadelphia 76ers hope that the addition of Kenneth Lofton Jr. will strengthen their frontcourt and contribute to their championship aspirations moving forward.
