Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid underwent successful surgery to address a displaced flap of the meniscus in his left knee. The team announced on Tuesday that Embiid will be re-evaluated in four weeks, but league sources suggest that his recovery could sideline him for up to two months, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Embiid had been dealing with "soreness" and "swelling" in his left knee since early January and had already missed three games due to the injury. However, his knee condition worsened when he suffered an injury in the fourth quarter of the 76ers' recent loss to the Golden State Warriors. Jonathan Kuminga fell on Embiid's left leg, just below the knee, exacerbating the issue.
As the NBA's leading scorer, averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game, Embiid's absence will be deeply felt by the team. From November 17 to January 25, he achieved an impressive streak, scoring 30 points or more in 22 consecutive games, which ranks as the fifth-longest stretch in league history.
This injury is a significant blow to both Embiid's individual accomplishments and the Philadelphia 76ers' success this season. The talented center has been having a historic season and may have been in the running for a second consecutive MVP award if he had remained healthy.
Unfortunately, this injury will likely prevent Embiid from playing enough games to be eligible for MVP consideration, as well as other awards and the All-NBA team. It is disheartening to see another injury cut his season short, considering his previous struggle with multiple injury setbacks throughout his career.
The absence of Embiid also poses challenges for the 76ers as a team. Prior to his injury, they had emerged as one of the Eastern Conference's top teams, even amidst the early-season drama involving James Harden. However, with Embiid's prolonged absence, their record has been slipping, currently holding the fifth-best record in the East.
As the trade deadline approaches, team president Daryl Morey faces the difficult task of figuring out how to strengthen the team for the remainder of the season. The 76ers do have cap space coming in the summer, and they could potentially leverage contracts to make immediate improvements. Additionally, the extra draft assets gained in the James Harden trade could be utilized to bolster the roster if and when Embiid makes his comeback.
With this latest setback, the Philadelphia 76ers face numerous uncertainties and daunting questions that were not present just a week ago. The team and fans hope for a swift recovery for their star player and a strong comeback to salvage their promising season.
